Below is an excerpt from our pre-wedding story (2008):
The Meeting…
Once upon a time there was a big, Scottish Ogre named Brian and a beautiful little princess named Jaclyn. One day their friends decided that it would be a good idea, if not a humorous idea, to set them up on a date. Brian was the tallest man they knew at 6’5” tall and Jaclyn was the shortest girl that they knew at 4’11” tall.
They met at their friends house with the most amusing and awkward silence. The ogre must have been awe struck by the princess’s beauty 😉 They spent a double date at the bowling alley, where the princess discovered that the ogre had a rather cute behind. It was love at first sight.
and then…
Brian and Jackie have been inseparable since that entertaining first date at the bowling alley. Almost six years. They share their anniversary with Groundhogs day, which happens to be just before Valentine’s Day, how convenient. They reside together on the third floor of a most beautiful castle in Calgary. Brian enjoys being able to walk across the street to his job as systems administrator at the University of Calgary. Jackie is also close to the Children’s Hospital where she has been a nurse for two years.
The proposal…
Thursday March 27 wasn’t any ordinary day in the lives of Brian and Jackie. They were on one of the best vacations ever together in Orlando, Florida. Who happened to be with them on this trip? Well it was those friends who set them up five years ago, Jackie and Dave. After a whole week of amusement parks and sunshine, the couples were spending the day at the most famous amusement park, The Magic Kingdom, Disney World. Their day was full of fun and excitement for all but Brian. He seemed to be feeling under the weather, not even wanting to eat. We had dinner at the Wolf Gang Puck restaurant which was spectacular, only again Brian didn’t eat anything. We were headed to see the parade and fireworks show at the magic Kingdom. Brian was offered the opportunity to stay in the car or go back to the hotel but he declined. He seemed to have a particular place in mind that would be perfect to watch the fireworks. It was in the rose garden in front of Cinderella’s castle. We sat along the edge of a path and waited for the fireworks to begin. Just as the fireworks started Brian decided that he was hungry and wanted a granola bar from the back pack. Jackie thought to herself, what a guy can’t eat all day and now as the fireworks are starting is when he wants to eat. Brian yanked Jackie out of her thoughts, literally, as he pulled Jackie across the path to stand in front of the fireworks. Again Jackie had thoughts that this boy was crazy, until she spotted a small box in his left hand. She could not believe what was about to happen, just to make sure it was real she glanced over at her two friends who had grins up to their eyeballs. Not much of his speech sank in as she took in everything around her, the heart shaped fireworks to the right, the old couple crying to the left and Brian. So focused and sincere, “I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me.” The rest of the fireworks were a blur as they hugged and kissed and took pictures. Jackie didn’t even get to see Tinkerbelle fly across the sky. I guess they will have to go back someday.
